JCSO Musician Spotlight: Diana Loomer, Timpani

Meet JCSO musician Diana Loomer!

Diana Loomer lives in Johnson City, Tennessee, and has performed with the JCSO for five years. Aside from her work with the JCSO, she works as a percussion instructor at Appalachian State University and Milligan University. She is the co-founder of Blue Iron Percussion.

Learn more about Diana below!

What is the best part of performing with the JCSO?

Playing timpani! This is my favorite percussion instrument, and I’m always excited for opportunities to play this instrument, especially in an orchestra.

What/who influenced your love of music?

My parents are both musicians (they met in music school!), so I’ve been surrounded by it my whole life. Some of my earliest memories include watching my mom play clarinet in an orchestra, and listening to my dad practice classical guitar at home.

What is your favorite hobby outside of music?

DIY: I bought a house recently (it’s a fixer-upper), so I’ve been building furniture, painting, and learning about all kinds of home renovations.

What is your favorite animal and why?

Anything furry, so that I can cuddle with it. I’m planning to adopt 2 cats very soon!

Why did you pick your instrument to learn to play?

I originally played clarinet. In 8th grade, I stumbled upon some percussion instruments while my sister was at marching band camp. While the band was on a break, I was noodling around, and someone heard me. Next thing I knew, I was the newest (and youngest) member of the marching band! I stuck with percussion after that.

What's the best piece of advice you've received as a musician?

When you’re feeling nervous for a performance, smile. It’s hard to smile and be nervous at the same time.

What was your most memorable performance?

This past summer I traveled to Taiwan to give some timpani clinics and performances. I have studied Mandarin Chinese for 10 years, so going there to perform was a dream come true!

Make sure to check out Diana at our next concert, Home for the Holidays, on December 14. Purchase tickets HERE.
